Can Chia Seed Water Really Help You Lose Weight?

Is chia seed water a magical weight reduction solution? Drinking this super seed steeped in water, according to proponents of a viral TikTok health movement, may be the key to avoiding overeating and, ultimately, weight reduction success.

Chia seeds are derived from the chia plant, Salvia hispanica, and were given its common name by Aztec warriors who used them for survival.

There is no research on chia seed water for weight loss, nor is there much substantial evidence to support the notion that chia seeds alone give this effect.

An animal research published in Food Research International discovered that rats that ate chia seeds lost more visceral fat than those who didn't.

"Chia seeds are tiny, but they pack in more nutrition than you think," Collingwood said.

Often termed a "superfood," they are packed with omega-3 fatty acids (from alpha-lipoic acids or ALAs, the plant-based form of the fatty acids), antioxidants, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, and zinc, she observes.

Per Collingwood, when combined with mindful, healthful eating, chia seeds could help you lose weight.

Chia is satiating, and can assist in preventing ravenous hunger and eating more later in the day, as long as someone is mindful about portions and pays attention to their body telling them if they are hungry or full
